The trail then climbs up the river onto the cliffs above, following the course of the river to the end of Waihaha Road.)

Statue of shearer, Te Kūiti (Te Kūiti is the home of one of the great champions of shearing, David Fagan, who by 2008 had won the Golden Shears 15 times, the New Zealand open title 16 times, and the world championship five times.)
Te Kuiti (Te Tokanganui a Noho marae (also known as Te Kūiti Pā) is located on State Highway 3 in the township of Te Kūiti. Built 1873.)

The Kawhia Emblem explained (Kawhia is known in Māori lore as the final resting place of the ancestral waka (canoe) Tainui. Soon after arrival, captain Hoturoa made it first priority to establish a whare wananga (sacred school of learning) which was named Ahurei. The harbour area was the birthplace of prominent Māori warrior chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngāti Toa tribe.)
